Do I really need bikepacking bags to bikepack?
"The short answer is that you will need some sort of storage bag when going bikepacking.”
The first item you buy when interested in cycling is a bike, or you can't ride. Easy?!
Not so mush. Road, cross country, downhill, cyclocross or touring bike is only a few categories on offer to choose your perfect bike from. Not an easy choice on where to invest your hard earned cash.
Speaking for myself when I first found bikepacking as a new way of riding my bike I immediately made the decision that this is something I would love to try. I did some research, watched many online bikepacking stories. That was it, the bug bit and I have not looked back. I have seen dry bags strapped to handlebars, frames and homemade saddle solutions. And they all worked!
But looking back at my first bike purchase, then my second..... THIRD and many upgrades. I should have rather bought the “one" bike I did not want to buy as it was too expensive for a newbie. Now calculating cost of lower end bikes and upgrades I could have bought three of the high end bikes!!!! lesson learnt.
If you have the means then buy a set of bikepacking bags, if not then a DIY solution will also do the job. When constructing your own solution be sure not to exceed the amount of a regtail bike bag set.
