Richard stumbled upon an American bikepacking write up some time back and this fairly new pastime in South Africa caught my attention. After much web searching I made up my mind to do a bikepacking trip through Lesotho. During my years of hiking on the Drakensberg Escarpment and meeting Basotho shepherds in those areas I wanted to get a better look into their culture and country and what better way than by riding slowly through the Lesotho Highlands.
This trip was one of my greatest highlights and I will definitely visit other areas in the future (middle route). Being an experienced hiker the transition was fairly easy, just take your hiking equipment and put it into soft bags which are attached to the bike in various places. There are many different ways to pack a bike so the best way is what practically suits you. I was told it can take up to three trips to perfect the best way of packing. I suppose the best way is to take the bare minimum and pack as light as possible. Below are images of what I packed:
