ITINERARY

DAY #1

HEIDELBERG - VAL - 98 KM

 

  • Day 1 pre-event breakfast in Heidelberg. We start riding through Heidelberg to where the trail starts.

  • "Die Kliphuis" is our afternoon stop with beers and snacks.

  • Explore small towns, Belfour and Greylingstad, on our way to the overnight destination. 

  • Afternoon arrival drinks in Val.

  • Dinner

DAY #2

VAL - HEIDELBERG - 87 KM

 

  • Along the rail trails between Val and Greylingstad, we discover new jeep tracks past farms stop at "Die Klip Huis" as we travel to the finish destination

Route:

  • During the adventure, the group can vote to use alternative route options through more remote farm areas to level up the weekend experience.

  • There are small obstacles, water, and crossings along the route.

SUPPORT

  • Group marshals will accompany the group and assist with pace and information about the area.

 

  •  Marshals will try and assist where they can but you will have to be self-reliant on bike repair, equipment, gear, and fitness.

 

ABOUT THE ROUTE

THE IRON LINE ROUTE is a there and back bikepacking route passing through backcountry towns Balfour, Greylingstad and Val while hugging a railway line that is perfect for train spotting.

 

You will travel 99.9% gravel over 175 km including some single track, water, and river crossings. The route is non-technical with mild climbs making it ideal for people new to bikepacking. The route can be done as a group ride adventure.

The starting point is at the town of Heidelberg Gauteng, South Africa, a short drive from major cities. From here you travel through Balfour, to Greylingstad and then arrive at Val where tents are erected for the overnighter. If you are not the camping type you have the option to overnight at the Hotel.
